The Senate Armed Services Committee defied President Bush on Thursday, with four Republicans joining Democrats in approving a plan for the trial and interrogation of terrorism suspects that the White House has rejected as unacceptable.
The Republican rebellion was led by Senator John W. Warner of Virginia, the committee chairman, with backing from Senators John McCain of Arizona, Lindsay Graham of South Carolina and Susan Collins of Maine.
So now the debate over how to try terrorist suspects in a court of law will not be between "shock and awe" Republicans and "terrorist-appeasing" Democrats, but between the Senate Republicans and the White House. And every time the neocon chickenhawks attempt to frame the former as the debate, all the Democratic caucus has to say is "We support Senator McCain's bill on this matter." More as things progress...

The NYTimes on Bush presser today reports that "Perhaps significantly, Mr. Bush did not threaten to veto a bill if it embodies the provisions that the Senate Armed Services Committee endorsed on Thursday, provisions involving the trial and questioning of suspects that the White House has termed unacceptable." Is there anythingt o stop Bush from once again issuing a "presidential statement" on the bill once it's signed? Reply to this
