Wage slavery as a way out of poverty, way to improve things, John.  I have never heard a more ridiculous argument.  Lets remove people from their land, ship them off to factories where they labor for low wages in substandard, nearly abusive conditions, so we can have our cheap clothes and feel good about lifting them out of poverty.  Meanwhile all the profit is being taken out of the country to the factories foreign investors.  How about instead we support real local economic development, even if it does start with "selling eggs to one another", instead of treating millions of people as yet another resource to be exploited?
