This was an incredibly necessary win for the Dems, and in the last few days, looked increasingly dire. Had African-American Republican Michael Steele won, his Senate seat would have been a bludgeon the national GOP would have beaten over the head of the Democrats every time they brought up the issue of race:
"Well, look at our own Michael Steele! How dare you say our party has racist tendencies! And stop bringing up those Harold Ford ads. We only paid for them!"
