The words we've been waiting to hear.  From the AP:

Barack Obama effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, based on an Associated Press tally of convention delegates, becoming the first black candidate ever to lead his party into a fall campaign for the White House.
The AP tally was based on public commitments from delegates as well as more than a dozen private commitments. It also included a minimum number of delegates Obama was guaranteed even if he lost the final two primaries in South Dakota and Montana later in the day.
The 46-year-old first-term senator will face Sen. John McCain of Arizona in the fall campaign to become the 44th president.

While we obviously will all be interested to hear how and when Clinton decides to accept reality, I for one am done holding my breath.  It's been five solid months of trench warfare, and the Obama people have done won it.

I'm too tired for eloquence right now, and the fight is far, far from over.  Enjoy that fresh air, and that sigh of relief, while we can.  I know I will.

More later tonight, as the results and speeches come in.

As someone who respects HRC, but voted for Obama, I'm disappointed in so many ways about how her campaign has turned out. I feel like I've gone thru the stages of mourning -- from denying to myself that obama had a chance to beat her so I wouldn't get my hopes up; anger at what the clinton campaign was willing to do and say to win (and that sounds naive, but i believe president clinton has been permanently tarnished among us democrats who still worshipped him despite the sex scandals); bargaining - well, actually i was never ready to give up the VP slot to her just to get her to quit the race; depression that the clinton campaign was DESTROYING barack during the wright days despite the fact that he was going to win; and now I'm trying to get to acceptance. Acceptance of how sad a figure she has become. and on a more hopeful note - I am so f-ing proud of the Democratic Party of choosing such an amazing nominee - who knew we had it in us? As a Southerner, it brings tears to my eyes to see this happen. Its not just about change from the past president, but a fundamental change within the hearts and souls of so many Americans to move forward beyond the 20th century race divisions that have hekd us back for so long. Its a different world. Thanks Barack.
