Overall, a draw. She dominated the first half by refusing to answer the questions posed, and giving speeches on the topics she wanted to instead. Biden dominated the second half even more, by showcasing his incredible fluency with foreign and military policy.
I really do believe the moment where he choked up about his kids will be the most lasting, remembered moment.
Still, the fact that Palin did not vomit on her microphone, given how low the standards were, means she did all she had to do. And she did more than that. She was a very effective communicator to the camera, even though her points were clearly memorized to the letter. She survived, which is all she had to do. Republicans should be happy about tonight.
Biden was off his game the first half of the debate. I wish he could have answered domestic policy questions better. But his easy dominance of the second half more than made up for the first half. Democrats who watched the entire debate—not just the first 15 mins—should be happy about tonight.
A draw.
10:28pm Palin says proof of her bipartisanship is that she has some Democrats in her family.
10:26pm The more you hear her talk, the more you realize she's full of it. There is just no there, there.
10:23pm Palin responds with her trademark Gibson-noted "blizzard of words". She cleary was rattled about how to respond to just raw, real emotionality. I guess she thought she was the only parent on stage.
10:20pm Biden just visibly choked up talking about what it's like to worry that "your kid isn't going to make it." He knows. Wow. That moment is going to replayed over and over.
10:16pm So, Palin agrees with Cheney that the office of the Vice-President is a 4th branch of government. Biden? "Vice-President Cheney is probably the most dangerous vice-president in American history. The vice-president is in the executive branch. He should understand that." Biden just destroyed Cheney, and by extension, Palin for defending him.
10:13pm The debate has been see-sawing between them all night. Now they seem pretty even as far as energy and verbal fluidity.
10:08pm Biden's answer on how he would carry out the Obama vision if he ever had to replace him was beautiful. "This is the most important election since 1932." It was amazing to hear, because I waited to feel myself react and think "whoo, that's hyperbole", and then I realized it was practically an understatement. The next president will have at least the same size challenges as F.D.R. himself.
10:06pm Palin: "John McCain, who knows how to win a war." Um, hmmm. WHICH ONE?!!! Vietnam?! Iraq?!
10:05pm Palin probably won the first half of the debate just by controlling the flow of the questions on domestic policy. Biden is destroying in this second half on foreign policy.
10:04pm Did Palin just start an answer on Darfur with "man..."?
10:02pm Biden's discussion of Bosnia and Kosovo was exemplary. He was at the front of those interventions, and it's obvious.
9:59pm Biden's answer on the surge in Afghanistan was totally convoluted. Biden's answer on nuclear proliferation was tight.
9:55pm Biden: "A McCain Administration? It's George Bush's." Over and over again. Awesome.
9:54pm Palin tells Biden that his "ticket's" attacks on the Bush administration are going to tire with the voters. The Bush administration=most unpopular administration in history. Now I know why McCain is tanking in the polls.
9:51pm Biden: "John McCain said he wouldn't even meet with the government of Spain!". Nice, Joe.
9:47pm She just threw out a hard "nucular".
9:46pm Biden is giving a detailed, highly informed answer on Afghanistan. I fully expect Palin to start her answer with "If it's ok, I'd like to go back to the energy issue."
9:44pm Biden just gave his best answer of the night, wrapping up the Iraq section.
9:42pm Biden: "We...will...end...this...war." Palin: "That's the white flag of surrender." Governor, if you think your rhetoric is more favorable on this issue than his, keep going.
9:40pm We're on to Iraq. Joe, this is your chance to take back the momentum of this debate.
9:39pm Yep, Gwen Ifill is the worst moderator ever.
9:36pm "Sen. Biden, do you support granting benefits to same-sex couples?" "Absolutely". Good for you, Joe.
9:34pm She just called him "Sen O'Biden".
9:32pm Biden: "We know what the cause is. The cause is manmade." Thank you sir.
9:31pm Palin on global warming: "I don't want to argue about what is causing it, I want to figure out how to solve it." Question, governor: how do you solve a problem, if you don't know what is causing it?
9:29pm Palin says she just wants to talk about energy again, and spouts off. Boy, sure would be nice if they had hired a moderator for this debate.
9:27pm It would have been nice if Biden, with regards to the credit card bankruptcy bill, had just said "I was wrong, Obama was right". It also would be nice if Delaware wasn't a wholly owned subsidiary of the credit card industry, which is why he voted for that disgusting piece of legislation. Not the senator's finest moment, then or now.
9:24pm Palin's "answer" on the energy bill was probably her strongest moment yet. Will people notice she refuses to answer any of Ifill's questions? Not if Ifill can help it.
9:19pm Biden: "We don't call that redistribution; we call that fairness."
9:17pm Sarah, if you want to defend those making more than $250,000 a year, go right ahead.
9:17pm Biden: "We have a different value set." Nice.
9:17pm So far, Palin seems like she's intent on spouting her rehearsed talking points, no matter what question Ifill has posed, or what Biden just said. Whatever feels good, even if it's utterly off-topic. That can be effective, if it doesn't become too obvious. I think it just did, and a big reason is that Biden has no problem with any topic they're on.
9:15pm Palin: "I may not answer the questions the way the moderator wants to hear". WTF?
9:13pm Palin's response: "I'd like to talk about the taxes". Governor, no one was talking about "the taxes".
9:12pm Biden's answer on the gas tank was awesome. And yes! He found the camera!
9:08pm Palin: "People are looking for something new"? Does she know who is at the top of Biden's ticket?
9:06pm Palin's answer is garbled, but her visual to the camera is strong.
9:04pm Biden is giving a strong, detailed answer on the bailout, but he needs to keep his eyes up off his notes.
